The Clinical Coagulation Research Unit at Lund University is a part of Malmö Center for Thrombosis and Haemostasis, which is a highly specialized centre for bleeding and thrombotic disorders within Region Skåne. The Center is unique in that it combines clinical and laboratory know-how. This highly specilized centre is a national centre for the investigation of patents with bleeding and thrombotic disorders, and patients or blood samples are sent from most parts of the country for investigation.

In 1974 the Unit was appointed Scandinavia's only International Treatment and Training Center by the World Federation of Hemophilia. In this capacity we have received many haemophilia patients from other countries for investigation and treatment, often of severe complications of the disease. In addition we often have physicians and other medical personnel from abroad with us for training.

After the discovery of APC resistance in the early 1990's by professor Dahlbäck we receive many thrombophilia samples from many parts of Sweden and Scandinavia for consultation about thrombophilia and thrombotic disorders.

On the historical side, the coagulation activity was founded at the end of the 1950's by Professor Inga Marie Nilsson, and since then has taken care of patients with hemophilia and other severe bleeding disorders from the whole country, as well as patients with a thrombotic tendency, especially of the venous kind.

The department is involved in extensive research and development work in the field of bleeding and thrombotic disorders.

Professor Inga Marie Nilsson was one of the true pioneers within the field of thrombosis and hemostasis and made many contributions during her career. She was involved in many of the issues concerning thrombosis and hemostasis and special mention must be given her work in von Willebrand disease, hemophilia and venous thromboembolism. She had a unique talent for combining clinical observations and conclusions from laboratory experiments. 

Professor Björn Dahlbäck’s research on the molecular mechanisms of the protein C anticoagulant system has focused on the role of activated protein C and its cofactor protein S in the degradation of coagulation factors V and VIII. His has done pioneering work on the genetics of thrombophilia and the description of APC resistance caused by FV Leiden.

Professor Erik Berntorp has continued the work that started with Inga Marie Nilsson and his main contribution as a distinguished researcher is in the area of hemophilia and von Willebrand disease. Dr Berntorp has mainly focused on the treatment of hemophilia and von Willebrand and also the genetic aspects of inhibitor development and the treatment of patients with inhibitors.
